You may think these classic apples need no introduction--as the most famous and popular green apple in the world, they're well known for their crispest-of-crisp texture, and tartest-of-tart flavor. But do you know their origin story? 

They're named after Maria Ann Smith, who cultivated them in the 1860s from seedlings that sprang up from where she tossed some crab apples on her farm in New South Wales, Australia. She liked the upstart apple enough to tinker with it and kept going until she got a cooking apple she liked. They proved popular immediately, selling out weekly at the fruit stall she took out at the market. After she passed away, a fellow planter in the area bought her farm, planted her variety extensively, and entered it in an agricultural show under the name she was known by locally. With that, "Granny Smith" was introduced to the masses, and the rest is history.
