With fall comes a pageant of colors and flavors. Plums, pears, melons, apples, cranberries. Squashes of progressing varieties. Meats and baked treats of longer cook times, warming our houses gently after the sweet afternoon heat fades.
Remember to celebrate the butter and the wheat, the salt and the sugar, that bring the pie all together. Balance the sweet and the tart. Pause to watch the honeybee drowsily greet the asters.
This time of year is all about adjusting. Sweater on, sweater off. Soup needs celery. We savor and take a pause in our wood stacking and harvesting to see the leaves falling around us.
It is so quiet after such a busy summer. It cannot last, but we can make it go slowly.
